1990년대 한국에서 유행하기 시작한 힙합문화 붐과 함께 그래피티는 힙합의 한 장르로 대중들에게 본격적으로 알려지기 시작했다. 이 시기
청소년이었던 나도 자연스레 이런 문화적 조류에 편승해 그래피티 작업을 시작하게 되었다. 대개 가명을 쓰는 그래피티 문화의 특징에 따라
그래피티(GRAFFITI) 스펠링의 앞의 두 글자만 따서 GR이라는 이름 뒤에 아라비아 숫자1을 붙여 GR1이라는 닉네임(태그네임)을 만들었다.
그래피티 안에는 다양한 장르가 존재하지만 대부분의 그래피티 아티스트들이 그러하듯이 나또한 영문폰트(보통은 자신의 작가명)를 이용하여
글씨를 꼬거나 화살표 등의 기하학적 문양을 넣어 문자를 복잡하게 만드는 와일드 스타일(Wild Style)이라는 장르에 흥미를 느끼고 작업을 시작했다.
일반 대중들에겐 그저 스프레이를 이용해 글씨를 쓰건 낙서 등을 하는, 이해되지 않는 문화이자 그림이라는 걸 잘 알고 있다. 그렇지만 이 책
을 통해 그래피티를 아끼고 사랑하며 고집스럽게 한 장르만을 해온 나의 작업들을 모두에게 보여주고 조금의 이해를 구하고자 한다.

Since 1990’s in Korea when it began to arise Hiphop boom, Graffiti was also genuinely spread out to people as a genre of
the hiphop cultures. During that times, I was in my youth so naturally jumped on this cultural waves and started my career
in graffiti. According to a general feature of using alias in graffiti, I made my own nickname(tag name) GR1 after the first two
letters of GRAFFITI and the Arabian number 1. Like the others, I also used English fonts(mostly, their aliases) and started it
with much interests in WILD STYLE in which the they twist or add geometrical figures such as arrows so the letters look
more complicated.
I know well that people would not understand or appreciate some mere written letters and drawing by sprays. However, I
try to show all my works I’ve made so far with so much cares and love as well as how I’ve had my own way to one genre
consistently.
