트"의 멤버 Yekaterina Samutsevich와 모스크바 시민들이 수록되어 있는 이 일련의 포트레이트는 러시아 정부가 모스크바에서 공안과 국
경 경비 때문에 개발한 최신 얼굴 인식 시스템에 의해서 그려진 것이다. 그러나 여기서 결과적으로 완성된 포트레이트는 회전하기 쉽고 자세
히 들여다볼 수 3D복제된 얼굴이어서 사진이라기보다는 디지털 라이프 마스크와 유사하다. 이 얼굴 인식 시스템 카메라에 있어서 중요한 점
은, 피사체의 동의 없이 촬영하는 것을 의도하고 설계되면서 그 구조로, 4개의 렌즈가 연동되고 피사체 자신이 촬영된다는 것을 알고 있지 않
아도, 표면적으로 카메라를 보는 데서 그 사람의 정면 사진을 생성한다. 이 시스템은 지하철이나 경기장 콘서트 홀 등의 혼잡한 공공 장소에서
얼굴 인식이나 외에는 평소 사진을 찍는 것을 거부하는 사람들의 사진을 찍기 위해서 고안되었다.
The series of portraits in this book, which include Pussy Riot member Yekaterina Samutsevic and many other Moscow
citizens, were created by a machine: a facial recognition system recently developed in Moscow for public security and
border control surveillance. The result is more akin to a digital life mask than a photograph; a three-dimensional facsimile of
the face that can be easily rotated and closely scrutinised. This book is the result of a series of encounters, interactions and
conversations between Broomberg & Chanarin and the photography collections at the Library of Birmingham made
possible by a commission from GRAIN and the Library with support from the Arts Council of England.
